Mobile identity

Posted by caitlinohagan on November 23rd, 2010

Smartphones are slowly replacing traditional dial and text mobile phones, and as they do they gradually change the face of IT and telecoms infrastructure. Soon mobile phones could pose as not only a device to call a friend, but as a passport and credit card.

Morten Hother Sørensen, Vice President at TDC spoke at length at the Next Generation Telecoms Summit about advancements in mobile technology – detailing the future of smartphones arcing towards a complete payment service. Morten suggested that future smartphones would incorporate software to be utilised as a passport, cash, driver’s license, public ID, health insurance, debit card and supermarket loyalty cards, among others.

As a mobile banking aid, smartphones could be used for information services, account balance and transfer, transaction history, and could be used as a payment service with P2P payments, tickets, parking, bill payments and used as a debit card, in a store.

The system of relying solely on a mobile phone as an ‘all-in-one’ wallet has several advantages, according to the delegates at the summit. From a governmental perspective, removing cash from the system and utilizing mobile payments provide a better opportunity for governments to collect taxes and potentially improve perception of security.

Financially, mobile payments cut out the middle man – in this instance allowing the customer to forgo dealing with a checkout assistant and self-serve, and lower the cost of cash handling. Online transactions (in theory) limit the chances for human error, and with value-based payments and offers, should see increased loyalty from mobile customers.

Those challenges posed at the summit centre around infrastructure; getting the correct support development and increasing processing speeds to speed up point of sale transactions. Morten highlighted that traditional plastic cards would need to be replaced by chip-based UICC SIM, which would be slotted into the phone, and shop terminals would be  updated with “NFC readers or made available through SMS or IP-addresses.”

In fact, the future of mobile payments isn’t very futuristic at all. Starbucks, the coffee giant, has already rolled out a mobile payment scheme which incorporates a ‘pay point’ on site which reads a pre-sent Starbuck’s card number off a customer’s mobile phone.

At the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco, Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt confirmed that he thought a Google Android-powered smartphone would eventually replace the credit card. “This could replace your credit card,” Schmidt said. “The reason this NFC chip is so interesting is because the credit card industry thinks the loss rate is going to be much better, they’re just more secure.”

The Mobile Revolution

Posted by caitlinohagan on October 26th, 2010

With the meteoric rise of the smartphone, shoppers are using their cell phones more and more to do both their shopping and retail related online searches (m-commerce), a trend that could eventually overtake more traditional methods of Internet browsing on a laptop or home computer.

Opinion is clearly divided however. Whilst some shoppers actively participate within the realms of m-commerce, others are wary of mobile shopping; with the majority unnecessarily concerned with online security risks.

One statistic revealed that more than 50 percent of US shoppers are now using their cell phones for shopping, but not for items other than those only available on a smartphone, such as music, apps and games.  Yet, cell phones are impacting on the customers shopping behavior in ways beyond just purchasing goods.  More than 80 percent of consumers in the US now use their cell phones to locate their nearest store to purchase a particular good and 65 percent review a product using their phone before making a decision.

The Internet has already seen its rise to consumer preference and last year saw peak online sales,  now the NGR Committee believe that m-commerce could do the same and want to look at the best investment techniques to roll out a user friendly platform.

“As consumers look to their phone as a natural extension of their social network, retailers are leveraging the opportunity to realize new sales opportunities from the mobile channel. M-Commerce enables the customer to always be connected to the retailer – anywhere and at any time. Retailers leveraging mobility to connect with consumers can deliver a new sales stream (expected to reach $630 billion in value by 2014) and can also drive the consumer into existing sales channels (store, web, etc). Implementing effective M-commerce technology comes down to four primary pillars of value: convenience, scale, cost effectiveness, and access.”

The committee is made of representatives from Barnes & Noble – Terri Pucin, VP Customer Experience, Dick’s Sporting Goods – Paul Yater, VP Applications & Intergrated Services, Foot Locker – David Hartig, Director IT Operations, Macys.com – Mike Robinson, SVP Technology Walmart – Sean Coutts , GM of Commerce, Gucci Group – Rodney Woodruff, Chief eBusiness Architect among many others and they themselves will drive the mobile revolution

To ease the burden on consumers it is important for retailers to create a simple and concise plan for how m-commerce will work for their business and for their customers to take a slice of the ‘virtual pie’.

A Unified Approach for Telecoms

Posted by caitlinohagan on October 20th, 2010

The average telephone handset has evolved, and as a result thousands of start-up companies are profiting out of the Telecom sector’s advances, supplying the various add-ons which inevitably accompany any new wave of technology.

Such innovations were used by the operators to supplement the pricey voice packages. However, the operators are now finding themselves in the hands of the ever-creative software/hardware companies and a changing consumer culture. iPhone appstore was the first to take fiscal advantage from operators’ customers, creating a financial redistribution within the Telecom industry.

With the telecom giants left to maintain the costly infrastructure that supports this ever growing new-media industry, the outlook for today’s communication service providers is set to get worse in a new 4G world where broadband is everywhere; LTE, WiMax, FTTX and cloud services to name a few..  The NGT APAC Summit committee is only too aware of this and believes that they must act now to prepare for the future.  How can telecom giants sustain increasing costs and avoid being relegated to the sidelines as bit-pipe providers?

To answer this question visionaries from companies such as Skype – Dan Neary, VP and GM Asia Pacific, Telenor - Sanjay Vaghasia, CTO, Vodafone – Durgadas Misha, Head of IT Outsourcing, Deutsche Telekom – Neil Millner, Head of Network & IT Procurement, and Virgin Mobile – Carl Ambrose, CIO, have joined a closed door meeting at the NGT APAC summit last week in Singapore to provide a unified investment strategy and Long Term Evolution (LTE) across the existing 3G networks. Such increased download speeds will allow the telecom industry to capitalize on the change in consumer habits and provide wider service offerings.

‘Such a meeting has been a long time coming, large operators have been losing revenue as the communication market has diversified, network optimization should lend to them finding new revenue streams as the level of service can expand’ – NGT Summit Director Asia Pacific.

A lack of focus has brought about inefficiencies related to roaming issues for users, and limited development efforts for each technology, the world is soon to be “unified” under LTE and at that point the industry can expect much greater economies of scale for both hardware makers and services providers, the NGT APAC committee are sure to take advantage of this.

4G or Not 4G, Apple Saying No

Posted by Karissa Campbell on October 15th, 2010

Despite rumours to the contrary, iPhone users won’t be able to get use a 4G network at any point in the next 14 months.

This flies in the face of earlier reports that Apple would be aligning with Verizon to enable Apple to utilise the 4G network. “At some point our business interests are going to align,” Verizon Communications Inc. President Lowell McAdam said, referring to Apple. “I fully expect it, but I don’t have anything to say [yet].”

With users expecting a shift transfer as early as January 2011, the news will come as a slight shock, although maybe not that much of a shock: iPhone waited for the 3G network to mature before they moved across in 2007. iPhone’s apparent stagnation could encourage competitors to drive forward and make further headway into the 4G smartphone sweepstakes; 4G-enabled Android phones already utilise Sprint’s WiMAX network, and dual-mode LTE-enabled Android phones will start to emerge for use on Verizon’s new network in the first half of next year.

iPhone is standing back on the new 4G, possibly because “Apple simply doesn’t want to be the guinea pig on new LTE networks that aren’t ready for primetime,” according to TechCrunch’s Steve Cheney. iPhone did the same in 2007 when they “waited to support 3G for one entire cycle, opting to release the original iPhone on AT&T’s mature 2.5G EDGE network, despite wide availability of 3G by early 2007.”

Other networks however are looking to cease the opportunity before Apple gets involved. Operators are pushing technology so that the infrastructure can meet demands, telecom communications companies are all vying for the right 4G network solutions. These will be discussed at a closed-door NG Telecoms Summit in North America, where representatives from AT&T and Comcast (among others) will have the opportunity to tackle infrastructure concerns and how to juggle software that requires a heftier bandwidth.

iPhone is clearly weary of jumping in with 4G, when they can “make a unified model that works across 3G networks on all carriers, and innovate with incredible new features like NFC which mirror what they accomplished with FaceTime on iPhone 4,” according to Cheney.

It is clear however, that iPhone, along with all smartphone providers will all make the jump to 4G, whether it is in 2011 or 2012, and companies will be more inclined to do so when there is better infrastructure in place to support and outstrip strong 3G networks.

Recent statistics say there are 263,088 apps currently available for download, with games market being the most lucrative.

According to official statistics for iPhone Apps this year, 15 of the best-selling apps are games, most notably the much lauded Angry Birds, in which players control the titular characters and exact revenge on greedy pigs that have stolen their eggs. Already having been downloaded close to 6.5 million times, the game has been so well received that its developers are now in talks with Hollywood Execs to make a movie around the theme of the game.

Of course, the App Store isn’t all fun and games. A multitude of other apps, hoping to help users in more productive ways are also riding high in terms of sales.
