Sometimes What’s on the Outside is More Important

Posted by vanessa on October 25th, 2011

Having attended Data Foundry’s recent Texas 1 grand opening celebration, I was amazed at just how beautiful a building this secure and practical could look – on the outside; how design intended for state-of-the-art data center and colocation services could be so inviting. Data centers most often resemble prisons – not a place anyone would want to visit – or work for that matter. Not this data center.

On this night, the night Data Foundry celebrated its Texas 1 grand opening and 17 years serving the telecom and technology sectors, what was on the outside was just as important to the company as what was inside. On this night, Data Foundry treated their guests (me included) as if we somehow had a hand in building Texas 1, as if we were as important (more important) than the building and the technology.

Data FoundryThey set up white tents with festive lights out front of Texas 1 – chairs were situated around the entrance and ‘porch area’ giving guests a beautiful view of the natural landscaping incorporating local Texas flora and grasses. It was a cool, breezy evening (so refreshing for Texas – how they managed that will forever be a mystery) – people lingered after the event was closed and relaxed as if this was more a hometown social event. Data Foundry personnel conducted nonstop tours of the facility – not salesy – just genuinely proud of what they’d created and excited to show it off. I couldn’t help but be drawn into the feeling that something very special had been accomplished.  And it has!

Texas 1, the first purpose-built, carrier-neutral data center in the Central Texas region is open for business. The initial phase of the highly anticipated 250,000 SF data center is fully operational and the first customers have begun to move in. Texas 1 offers secure colocation and disaster recovery solutions, including dedicated worksite recovery space. Texas 1’s unique design includes independent and diverse power, water and network feeds with no single point of failure within its power, cooling and network systems. The site’s fully redundant power is fed from two separate substations, a rare feature for data centers, with a dedicated feed enclosed in an end-to-end, concrete encased duct bank.  The chilled water cooling system enables maximum cooling flexibility from standard single cabinet deployments to high density configurations. Even the most complex High Performance Computing (HPC) environments can be properly cooled and supported within Texas 1. With 17 network carriers available, Texas 1 also provides customers a variety of carrier-neutral options for their network solution.

Did I mention that the inside was just as spectacular as the outside?!

Low Latency Becomes Increasingly Critical in Every Industry

Posted by Jaymie Scotto on September 20th, 2011

Maura Mahoney, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development for Sidera Networks sums it up nicely in a recent article for Corp! Magazine – Low Latency is no longer solely imperative to the financial services industry, it is an area of focus for companies across a variety of industries. With the increase of cloud adoption and bandwidth-intensive applications, businesses are utilizing innovative operations that require more efficient network connectivity. Just as minimizing delays in transactions and increasing data speed are critical to success, performance delays can lead to costly outcomes.

_Low latency networks’ real time connectivity is ideal for businesses operating in today’s deadline-driven society. The connectivity facilitates more efficient collaboration between employees, customers, staff, students, and enterprises, saving time and money. For example, low-latency networks are a critical component to providing superior quality care in the healthcare industry. Real time connectivity allows for faster assessments, diagnoses, and collaboration between doctors and nurses.

Speed has become a network must have across industries. Low latency requirements and networks should be tailored to individual clients’ needs. To ensure that your network is suited to support your business’ needs consider the following:

Application performance on high-speed networks can be enhanced by combining low latency and high capacity.

  1. High-speed networks act as the ideal platform for applications, such as video-conferencing, rich content, live-streaming media, and access to real-time information.
  2. Improve the reliability and accessibility of your cloud-based Web applications via a low latency network.
  3. The real-time connectivity provided by a low latency network is ideal for deadline-driven environments.
  4. Low latency networks allow for more efficient collaboration, saving time and money.

Metro|NS – A Perspective on Coherent Optics

Posted by vanessa on June 14th, 2011

Delivering the lowest latency and most reliable networks and connections in and around the New York metro area, Metro|NS can assist with any stage of network development.

Read the latest blog by their CTO, Doug Haluza, below:

COHERENT OPTICS

As the need for speed took fiber optic transmission beyond 10 Gbps per channel, long-range optical transponders have moved beyond the Morse code-like on-off keying (OOK) used in fiber optic communications for decades. More sophisticated modulation and demodulation schemes are commonly used in modern wireless equipment where radio frequency bandwidth is scarce, but had not been widely applied to optical transmission where bandwidth is more plentiful. For example, a 50 MHz channel bandwidth is relatively wide-band for licensed microwave radio, while 50 GHz channel spacing in DWDM optical transmission is relatively common.

OOK is cheap and works well on standard single-mode fiber up to speeds around 10 Gbps, providing little commercial demand for more efficient optical modulation to this point. At 10 Gbps, fiber impairments like dispersion come into play, and fiber characterization testing and dispersion compensation are needed to ensure reliable operation. At higher data rates dispersion sensitivity increases, and more dispersion compensation is required. Quadrupling the data rate using the same modulation would require sixteen times the dispersion compensation. 40 Gbps optics would not be as widely deployed if network operators had to re-engineer their DWDM networks again, as was the case when moving from 2.5 to 10 Gbps.

Coherent optical receivers had been a hot topic of research in the 1970s and 1980s when system reach was limited by signal attenuation in the fiber. A coherent receiver is less noisy and can reliably detect a weaker signal, thereby extending the distance between network elements. Once optical amplifiers were developed, they became the preferred solution to the attenuation problem, and work on coherent optics was largely abandoned.
