Coverage From the Show: Zayo, CenturyLink and Windstream kick off Day 2 of Metro Connect 2012

Posted by Jaymie Scotto on February 29th, 2012

Scott Beer, General Counsel of Zayo Group joins Steve Davis, SVP of Public Policy and Government Relations at CenturyLink, and Michael Rhoda, SVP of Government Affairs at Windstream Communications. Our friend Andy Lipman, Partner at Bingham McCutcheon, moderated the keynote panel of day 2. The focus was on the role of the regulator in the local metro carrier marketplace, including industry update and analysis.

The common thread between all 3 of the panelists is that their companies have all been very active in recent M&A activity, when regulatory analysis heats up.

Andy asked Scott, when you are doing your due diligence, what role does regulatory activity have? Scott said “regulatory does not wag the dog at Zayo. We had to dig down a bit deeper in our recent 360 acquisition, but our previous acquisitions, which have been wholesale in nature, we did not have too many issues.”

Michael continued that “in competitive markets, we need to let them be competitive.” There has been a number of deals in the past few years where the state has loaded up on regulations that got in the way of the deal. His wish is to not let regulatory processes get in the way of doing business.

Steve added that he doesn’t think the FCC is going to change though he wants parody with the cable guys. He would like to be treated the same as the cable guys, in places where CenturyLink has regulations for the same products and cables have none.

Scott concluded that the locked in provisions ratchet up the initial volume commitments- which makes it difficult for new providers to compete.

Andy then asked how did Zayo participate in the Obama Broadband Initiative? Scott stated that Zayo received 4 awards in the past few years, varying in size and direct services. “Our experience so far has been very positive, allowing us a cost-effective way in getting to an area where we wouldn’t have previously gone.”

Michael shared that they sat out on round 1 and got into round 2, focusing on getting fiber deeper into our rural areas for our consumer base. Cost is high in these areas and without federal grants, these places wouldn’t have access they now enjoy.

Optimism Abounds at Metro Connect 2012!

Posted by DeanPerrine on February 28th, 2012

Metro Connect Day 1 – Wrap Up

From the moment I stepped off the plane here in Miami, I knew things were getting hot. For starters, it’s hot! Then, none of the cabs at the airport (or anywhere in Miami best I can tell) take credit cards. But no worries, there’s an ATM around every corner begging to charge you $7.50 to take out $10. It’s hot, and so am I…and so is Metro Connect!

The “hot” theme continued right into day one of Metro Connect. Telecom is hot! (the good kind of hot) There, I said it. Though some of the scars of the telecom bust are still very visible, much of the uncertainty of the last 10 years has been replaced by optimism – the sarcasm, replaced by genuine excitement. The scars left by the bust look more like character marks today – at least they do here – at Metro Connect – today.

The day’s big takeaway…

While the industry consolidates, attendance at this show is increasing and it’s being fueled by investment interest and M&A…which will continue to increase. Take a look at this poorly photographed slide. It’s our friend Hunter moderating the keynote panel this morning. I know, I know, you can’t really see it very well. It doesn’t matter. What does matter is that the yellow section shows the increasing number of Financial industry folks that are attending this show. They’re everywhere and that’s a good thing!

Good friends…

Not my friends…yet!

More tomorrow…

Moistly, have a blast in Miami!

Live Coverage of Keynote Discussion at Metro Connect USA 2012

Posted by Jaymie Scotto on February 28th, 2012

Kicking off Metro Connect USA 2012 today, Hunter Newby, CEO of Allied Fiber, moderated the Keynote Panel this morning. Top panelists included Bjarni Thorvardarson, CEO of Hibernia Atlantic, Mike Sicoli, CEO of Sidera Networks, Timothy Horan, Managing Director, Communications Services at Oppenheimer & Co., and Paul Hobby, Managing Principal of Genesis Park, LP. The panel focused on financial and strategic predictions for the M&A landscape in 2012.

Hunter began by asking Bjarni what is driving recent M&A activity? Bjarni stated that he’s seeing it move from metro to long-haul activity. Now with recent consolidation, Hibernia is seeing carriers wanting to build their own global networks.

Paul added that it’s a riddle why we keep consolidating and yet the Metro Connect event keeps growing (notably with a growing number of financial investors).

Hunter then asked that even with the hangover from the telecom bubble, is there a fiber glut? So taking a poll of the audience, he asked who is building fiber. Half the room raised their hands. Hunter stated that clearly there is no glut as we are necessarily building. Hunter concluded that the one thing he would like to change about our industry is awareness.

Here are some key slides that were also shared:

Metro Fiber Build-Outs – It’s Who You Know!

Allied Fiber’s Hunter Newby Talks Challenges Faced by Metro Players

Metro Connect Panel: Practical Challenges Facing Network Build-Outs

Allied Fiber’s, CEO, Hunter Newby was among a distinguished group of industry thought leaders that discussed the challenges faced by metro players, specifically those fiber providers that are charged with filling the increasing demand through strategic build-outs. Other panelists include John Finke (Hickorytech), John Phillips (Team Fishel) and Sean Baillie (Windstream).

Some of the key challenges discussed by the panel include:

  • Speed to market
  • Complacency among construction – getting construction completed in a reasonable amount of time
  • Fiber gets old
  • Existing fiber is fragmented and disconnected – fiber is everywhere – access to that fiber is a challenge
  • Not all markets are created equal with regard to existing fiber, ease of construction, i.e., regulatory / physical landscape etc.

All of these challenges suggest that those players with an insider’s knowledge of the local market will be the most successful.

Zayo, AboveNet and FiberTech kick off Metro Connect 2012 with CEO Interviews

Posted by Jaymie Scotto on February 28th, 2012

Dan Caruso, President of Zayo Group, is joined by Bill LaPerch, CEO of AboveNet and John Purcell, CEO of FiberTech on the first panel of Capacity’s Metro Connect USA 2012. The CEO Interviews were focused on discussing successful business strategies to create profitable and scalable metro providers. These bandwidth infrastructure providers all share the same storyline that their companies are all profitable and growing.

After hearing details on their key market focus (particularly enterprise and media) and current business strategies, Moderator Dr. Judy Reed-Smith, CEO of Atlantic ACM, asked them to discuss their future plans and trends they see.

Dan stated that the industry trend is toward a natural evolution towards consolidation. He cites Zayo’s recent acquisition of 360 as an example. He also joked that anyone in the audience who wants an exit
strategy and has assets to sell, to come see him.

Dan also stated that “when we win a customer deal, we expand our networks.” Zayo focuses on emerging cities and locations and sees a lot of opportunity in expanding their services and products to these new PoPs.

Dr. Reed-Smith closed by asking what is it that you would change about the industry. Bill stated “nothing”. We positioned ourselves well, we have a class A team. He’s proud of where his company is and where AboveNet is going.

John said Bill is right, that the fundamentals are in place for continued growth. He cited less regulatory influence and a stronger economy as issues he would like us together to change. John noted it’s not like some issues in healthcare and manufacturing where jobs are being lost. But truth is we are dependent on the economy.

Dan closed that he would increase the rate of bandwidth implementation,
and jokingly he added that he would restrict competitors’ budget. He said it’s shocking how telecom meltdown is still impacting on investors.  Although we operate our businesses more responsibly now, we need to articulate these changes, notably sustainable revenue, to investors.

JT Communications is Now Colo Atl – But What is Colo Atl?

Posted by Jaymie Scotto on February 28th, 2012

Colo Atl, a provider of colocation, data center and interconnection solutions, announced the formal rebranding of JT Communications as Colo Atl, a JT Communications company.

Got that part? Good. Some things to know…

Colo Atl is my client. Its owner, Tim Kiser, is my friend – and will be yours the first time you meet him. While extremely valuable, its services are not unique. While praised by customers, its solutions are not “bleeding edge” or “cutting edge” or “edge of the universe” or any other over-used industry cliches. No, Colo Atl is best described using the same words you might use to characterize the lifelong family doctor. Or, frankly, how you might describe a friend. And it’s how I’d characterize Colo Atl. A few other words I’d use to describe Colo Atl:

• Fair
• Honest
• Proud & Patriotic
• Hard working
• Friendly
• No-nonsense
• Affordable
• Genuinely concerned for your bottom line

It’s unfortunate that these aren’t the words we typically see in the tech or telecom industry, because in my opinion they say so much more than “best in class” or “industry leading.” They say “thank you” for your business, we’ll do everything we can to keep it. That’s Colo Atl! Yes, Colo Atl has an amazing facility located in the perfect spot that enables affordable global interconnection – but it comes with all the familiarity and care of an old friend!
Here’s what the owner, Tim, had to say…

“Our new brand is an important step in our evolution into a premier company and signifies a commitment to our current and potential customers. The name ’Colo Atl’ reflects our no-nonsense approach to provide colocation, data center & interconnection services in Atlanta, Georgia. We have exceptional customer support and affordable rates, which are very important factors in deciding where to locate your telecom or enterprise facilities. At Colo Atl, you will receive personal attention from me, the owner, and my staff.”
Don’t believe him? Call him! No, seriously, call him.

Inteliquent Rebrands; Celebrates by Signing HD Voice Interconnect with Broadvox!

Posted by DeanPerrine on February 28th, 2012

Turns Up Commercial HD Voice Interconnect Solution for Broadvox…

After making a major rebrand announcement, Inteliquent rolled up its sleeves and went right back to work. Here’s the latest…

Inteliquent announced today that it is implementing its commercial HD Voice Interconnect solution for Broadvox. Inteliquent’s HD Voice service is a High Definition wideband voice interconnection solution for the competitive carrier market. Inteliquent solves the problem of non-interconnected ‘islands of HD’ by providing easy access to other HD service providers interconnected with Inteliquent, and adds incremental value to carrier investments in IP networks and Voice over IP (VoIP) services. The service has been successfully interconnected with Broadvox, a leading VoIP, SIP Trunking and Unified Communications solutions provider.

Inteliquent’s HD Voice Interconnect enables service providers to efficiently route HD Voice calls between competitive carriers and hosted voice application providers. While Broadvox has HD voice capabilities today with some of its carrier partners, by using Inteliquent as an intermediary, the number of service providers that Broadvox can access is expanded. Subsequently, by completing the ability to negotiate HD voice interconnection through Inteliquent, Broadvox has dramatically increased the number of endpoints that can benefit from the high quality of HD voice. Traffic coming from Inteliquent can now be received by Broadvox and service all of their endpoints with the same quality of service on all traffic.

“As the leader in offering HD interconnection solutions for service providers, Inteliquent’s extensive connectivity makes it easy for us to expand the reach of our voice quality and capabilities for our customers,” comments Gary Tabachnik, Vice President Business Development of Broadvox. ”Inteliquent made the testing and turn-up process very easy. It was quick and seamless.”

“We are pleased to add Broadvox to the group of service providers who have deployed our HD Voice Interconnect offering as part of their broader wideband voice technology,” comments Surendra Saboo, President and COO of Inteliquent.  We look forward to speaking with other service providers who are planning wideband voice deployments to maximize the value for their customers.”

MEF Introduces Carrier Ethernet 2.0

Posted by Caitlin O'Hagan on February 24th, 2012

This article was originally posted by ConvergeDigest.

The Metro Ethernet Forum introduced a set of “Carrier Ethernet 2.0″ specifications aimed at revolutionizing the efficiency and usability of Ethernet service delivery through the addition of three standardized features: Multi-class-of-service (Multi-CoS), Interconnect and Manageability.

Carrier Ethernet 2.0 is defined by its ability to deliver differentiated applications over interconnected, managed networks globally. Whereas the first generation of Carrier Ethernet standardized E-Line and E-LAN services, CE 2.0 standardizes Multi-CoS over eight interconnected services, including two versions of E-Line, E-LAN, E-Tree and E-Access.

Newly defined Multi-CoS extensions will now ensure standardized performance objectives across geographic boundaries, resulting in improved QoS and optimized efficiency on a global scale. New interconnect specifications extend the reach between carriers, and new management specifications provide scalability and measurability not previously possible. A new Mobile Backhaul Implementation Agreement creates a standard for 4G mobile backhaul services through Multi-CoS-enable interconnects.

The Metro Ethernet Forum cited several benefits for enterprises and Service Providers, most notably better service level agreements (SLAs) per location regardless of location.

Key standards and implementation agreements supporting CE 2.0 were completed by the MEF in January. The Metro Ethernet Forum is also planning to offer CE 2.0 certifications.
