TELEHOUSE America’s NYIIX Traffic Doubles; Maxes Over 200 Gigabits of Internet Traffic

Posted by Karissa Campbell on November 30th, 2011

Talk about impressive! In just under eight months, TELEHOUSE America’s public peering  interconnection point, New York International Internet Exchange (NYIIX), has exceeded the 200Gbps (gigabits per second) max traffic volume threshold. Earlier this year (in April), news from TELEHOUSE
emerged, noting that NYIIX achieved the 100 gigabit milestone. At that point, this meant traffic had doubled in less than 18 short months. Now it has doubled again in less than a year. Currently, NYIIX is the biggest public Internet exchange in the New York Metro Market. It is also in the top 10 of the world’s largest peering points.

Established in 1996, NYIIX has quickly become the most popular neutral exchange point in New York, consisting of 146 active peering members from all over the world. It is one of the largest neutral Internet exchange points on the United States’ east coast and is owned and operated by TELEHOUSE America. This increase in traffic demonstrates TELEHOUSE’s ability to attract both large ISP’s to the exchange and showcases the huge benefits of peering to smaller companies looking to reduce costs.

NYIIX’s main goal is to provide the Internet community with a neutral, scalable peering infrastructure and to assure reliable and robust Internet connectivity. With plans to invest in redundant infrastructure and expand access in other local carrier hotels, NYIIX provides 1G and 10G connections in the following:

  • 111 8th Avenue
  • TELEHOUSE New York Broadway,
  • TELEHOUSE New York Teleport on Staten Island
  •  TELEHOUSE New York Chelsea located on 85 10th Avenue
  • 60 Hudson St

NYIIX offers public peering as well as private peering over VLAN. This enables independent networks to exchange internet traffic to complement and supplement public or paid bandwidth networks.  By peering with TELEHOUSE, customers interconnect over a layer-2 switch to many ISPs, content and application
providers, at numerous locations, providing a more cost effective and improved network performance solution.

“NYIIX is one of the most exciting services offered by TELEHOUSE. We are delighted to announce such a huge success,” says Akio Sugeno, Vice President of Internet Engineering, Operations, and Business Development. “Achieving 200 gigabits per second is no small accomplishment, and it further proves that NYIIX is one of the most significant IXP’s in the United States. As we move into 2012, we will continue to expand NYIIX’s presence in the New York Metro Market and make further investment in the infrastructure to support the needs of our members.”

The NYIIX platform is regularly updated in order to accommodate new trends and technology requirements. TELEHOUSE is looking forward to announcing new updates in Q1 of 2012. (And we can’t wait to blog about them!)

Innovative? You Betcha!

Posted by DeanPerrine on November 29th, 2011

Like any other industry, the telecom industry is keen on giving awards to those participants  who are doing something different or unique, something “innovative.” The problem is that in the tech/telecom industries in particular we’re quick to throw “innovative” around when it doesn’t always apply. I came to this realization after I jokingly referred to my 2 ½  year old son falling down a flight of stairs as an “innovative” way of getting down – sorta’ funny to me – mostly appalling to my wife and all others present.  It was like five stairs – give me a break! Needless to say, it got me to thinking about what being “innovative” really means. Without further ado, here it is:

According to Wikipedia (I know, grumble grumble grumble), “Innovation is the creation of better or more effective products, processes, technologies, or ideas that are accepted by markets, governments, and society.” Do tell. “Innovation differs from invention in that innovation refers to the use of a new idea or method.” So, different or unique ideas are only innovative if they are accepted and used? Now THAT makes sense.

For those keeping track, my son falling down the stairs was funny (even he laughed people!), but not “innovative” as this is NOT a generally accepted or practiced means of getting down the stairs.

So, as you can imagine, when I read that Neutral Tandem / Tinet had won Capacity Magazines’ 2011 award for Best Market Innovation, naturally I thought, “I’ll be the judge of that!” My first “innovation snob” test – how exciting. And guess what? A dead ringer!

The award recognizes innovations in wholesale telecom, how these have been implemented, and how these services have been received by the market. The judging panel consisted of the senior editorial team of Capacity magazine and a panel of telecoms analysts and industry experts. The pre-qualifications for the award met the definition and with nearly 200 customers (and climbing) singing its praises, Neutral Tandem / Tinet’s innovative (and I mean that) EtherCloudSM solution knocked it right down the stairs. I’ll keep this in until someone edits it out.

Innovation Exemplified:

Neutral Tandem / Tinet is recognized for its innovative EtherCloud solution. Developed earlier this year, in response to the heavy market demand, Neutral Tandem and Tinet collaborated to develop this solution that delivers end-to-end global Ethernet solutions, interconnecting diverse networks. EtherCloud simplifies the delivery of Ethernet and VPLS services on a global scale, while removing all hurdles that are required to interconnect networks across a global footprint. Standard Ethernet Exchange platforms provide access to Points of Presence that are managed in isolation of all other access points.  Connectivity between each PoP has to be stitched together by various providers, which requires negotiating additional commercial terms and interoperability testing with each provider.  With EtherCloud, 120 PoPs across the world are interconnected, providing customers located in one location the ability to access network solutions offered by every other provider connected to any point on the EtherCloud platform.

“We designed the service to deliver a compelling value proposition: to simplify and streamline customers’ off-net interconnections, to extend their network reach and to market their local Ethernet services to customers worldwide,” said Paolo Gambini, Chief Marketing Officer of Tinet. “The offering is further strengthened by end-to-end SLAs to meet the demands of enterprise customers. We are honored to be recognized by Capacity Media for this achievement.”

10 Ways to Maximize Bandwidth Caps on Your ISP

Posted by Caitlin O'Hagan on November 22nd, 2011

This article was originally posted on DSLServiceProviders.org

Bandwidth caps have quickly become the norm among internet service providers, and despite their assurances that such usage restrictions would only affect a few heavy users, it’s no secret that bandwidth can evaporate pretty quickly even with average use.  Video streaming, gaming, and families of users can go through quite a few gig in a relatively short period – short enough to warrant a warning, if not a surcharge, from their ISP.  So it would be useful to know some tips on how to make the most of your allowance. Here are ten ways that you can take smaller bites out of your allotted bytes:

  1. Do a Background Check – No, we don’t mean hiring a PI to dig up dirt on the CEO of your ISP. We’re talking about programs or applications that run on your device whenever it’s online. You can monitor for unnecessary drains on your resources by downloading TCP Eye.
  2. Pass on the Auto Updates – Many programs will install with user-selectable update options. Use these opportunities to save bandwidth by de-selecting automatic updates. You can get the updates manually later on.
  3. Block Ads – Apart from just being annoying, those pop-up ads take up bandwidth. Download ad blocking software so you can make better use of it.
  4. Savings in a Flash – Some websites make use of Flash to stream videos automatically when visiting certain pages. Make sure you don’t have Flash set to run automatically. There are also flash ad blocking add-ons available for multiple browsers and platforms.
  5. Cache Savings – You can set your browser to cache images, and even select the amount of memory to set aside for the task. This will allow you to retrieve stored web pages from your device’s memory rather than the web, and thereby saving you more bandwidth.
  6. External Drive – You definitely need multiple back-ups of your important files in case of a crash, damage to, or theft of, your device. We recommend making use of an external drive source in favor of online storage when bandwidth is a concern.
  7. Choose Wisely – Regarding those files that you do choose to backup online, you may want to be more selective about what needs safeguarding and what can simply do with a disk copy.
  8. Change Your Resolution  –  Video far and away represents the largest slice of the average internet user’s bandwidth pie. If you can’t do with less video, maybe you can get by with a little less quality in your videos via a lower resolutions setting.
  9. Apply Compression – As a First Aid measure for saving bandwidth, this treatment can be a life-saver. Download image optimizing software that allows you to send photos in a compressed format.
  10. You’ve Got Mail Issues – Specifically: forwards, attachments, image loading – all of which can add up. Screen your inbox and only open those forwards that you really need to, and only those attachments that aren’t likely to be lolcatz; set your mail client to not load images automatically. You’ll thank us later.

A Perfect Fit: Sidera Networks Expands Xtreme Network to Sentinel’s NJ Data Center, Benefits Fortune 500 Customers in NY/NJ Metro Area

Posted by Karissa Campbell on November 16th, 2011

With the growing number of Fortune 500 customers within Sentinel Data Centers’ New Jersey facility (NJ-1), timing could not be more perfect for Sidera Networks, the premier provider of fiber optic-based network solutions, to expand its network into NJ-1.  As a result of this expansion, Fortune 500 and other Sentinel customers now have access to Sidera’s Xtreme Ultra-low Latency Network.

Sidera’s high capacity, high availability Xtreme Ultra-low Latency Network offers the lowest latency paths between the New York metropolitan area financial exchanges and other key locations to deliver diverse and resilient connectivity. Unlike other commercial networks, Xtreme is able to keep traffic exclusively in New Jersey or extend into New York, based on customers’ specific routing requirements.

“Sidera Networks is excited to be able to serve the growing roster of Fortune 500 customers within the Sentinel NJ-1 facility,” remarks Mike Sicoli, CEO of Sidera Networks.  “We appreciate that Sentinel’s customers are highly quality-sensitive with respect to their data center environment and feel that the robust, scalable and ultra low latency nature of our Xtreme network is a perfect fit in connecting these users to key exchanges and interconnection points throughout the NY/NJ metro area.”

Earlier this year, Sentinel completed the first phase of the construction and commissioning of its 330,000 square foot, multi-tenant NJ-1 facility. The facility is designed to meet the most stringent enterprise standards, and is LEED Gold pre-certified with best-in-region energy efficiency.

“It’s a powerful combination – giving customers the ability to deploy a mission critical data center inside NJ-1 with direct connectivity to Sidera’s high quality network,”  comments Nelson Frye, Director of Business Development for Sentinel Data Centers. “We are thrilled Sidera has chosen to build into NJ-1 and look forward to connecting our enterprise user base with Sidera’s flexible and highly resilient network platform.”

Optimization – What Will You Do With Your Finished Basement?

Posted by DeanPerrine on November 16th, 2011

If I told you I could quickly run an analysis of the total square feet of your house and subsequently show you a finished basement you never knew existed, would you let me? What if I then told you that I could rent that finished basement (remember, a second ago you didn’t know it existed), and you could buy a new car, new boat or (snore) put it in your kid’s college fund. How would that sound? Sounds good, right? Of course it does – unless the new space would ultimately serve as quarters for the mother-in-law – but let’s not conjure thoughts of new space in the dog house.

It’s called Optimization, and although there aren’t any optimization tools that can uncover unrealized excess square footage in your house (at least not that I’m aware of), this scenario exists in the telecom universe.

Global Capacity has integrated its industry-leading network optimization analysis tools into its One Marketplace Access Exchange platform. The customized algorithms offer Global Capacity the ability to optimize networks, identifying excess capacity that can be offered through the One Marketplace Access Exchange, meeting market demand exceeding 150,000 quotes a month.

By utilizing the automated optimization algorithms powered by the One Marketplace Access Exchange, Global Capacity is able to help companies identify more efficient network solutions for off-net access services.  Specifically, Global Capacity can execute network optimization analyses that identify opportunities to reduce costs through network novation opportunities, as well as by identifying excess capacity that can be sold back into the market via the One Marketplace Access Exchange. By novating non-strategic off-net network assets to Global Capacity, customers can reduce costs while simplifying operations, enabling them to re-focus efforts on maximizing on-net services and other core competencies to better serve their customers. By identifying excess capacity within existing network inventories and loading it into One Marketplace Access Exchange, customers are able to monetize assets they have already paid for. This excess capacity, which is typically stranded and represents a sunk cost to the customer, can be sold into the market based on customer demand currently running through the One Marketplace Access Exchange, increasing revenue while effectively reducing the cost of that capacity.

“One Marketplace Access Exchange was designed and built to improve efficiency, while streamlining and optimizing the pricing, procurement and provisioning of access network services,” states Patrick Shutt, Global Capacity CEO. “By incorporating our network optimization capabilities into the One Marketplace Access Exchange platform our customers now have the ability to pull back the covers and realize untapped capacity, and convert that capacity back to the market, priced more competitively. This revenue is directly attributable to EBITDA,”

Global Capacity provides network operators the unique ability to strategically interconnect to the One Marketplace Access Exchange in order to take advantage of automated marketplace rates for access networks.  This unique dynamic enables customers to grow revenue by identifying unused capacity, while dramatically improving EBITDA performance through lower operating expenses and leveraging the value of unrealized network capacity.
