Neutral Tandem Places Second in Forbes’ 25 Fastest Growing Technology Companies in America

Posted by Karissa Campbell on February 17th, 2011

Talk about a nice feat! Today, Forbes released its annual list for the “25 Fastest Growing Technology Companies” in America, and Neutral Tandem placed an impressive second overall with a stellar sales growth rate of 100% every year for the past five years. A considerable achievement indeed, considering that Forbes annually reviews more than 5,000 tech companies each year for this exclusive list!

In order to determine the top 25 fastest growing tech companies in America, Forbes revisits the prior year’s list to see how it performed against the market. The stock market continued its slow but sure recovery. According to Forbes, from March 12, 2010, through Feb. 2, 2011, companies on the Nasdaq 100 Technology Sector Index were up 27%; companies on the S&P 500 lagged far behind, but still registered a 13% increase. Forbes’ list of fast-growing techs largely defeated both indexes, gaining 44% overall, or 34%, which exclude acquisitions.

Forbes examined over 5,000 technology companies, looking for minimum sales of $25 million and sales growth of at least 10% over the latest 12 months. To be included within the list, Forbes also required median long-term (three-to-five year) earnings-per-share growth estimates to be greater than 10%; and ranked companies on their five-year sales growth, which needed to be in double-digit territory for each year. Lastly, utilizing detailed scoring data from Audit Integrity, a global governance ratings and research firm, to weed out any companies that had substantial legal concerns, accounting, or governance issues.  For full article, visit here.

All in all, great news for Neutral Tandem!

Neutral Tandem, headquartered in Chicago, provides voice, data and video interconnection services worldwide, enabling broadband providers to exchange data between their respective networks. For more information, please visit www.neutraltandem.com.

9 Key Factors You Should Consider when Selecting the Right Data Center

Posted by laurensauer on February 16th, 2011

Last week we posted steps 1-3 from the Area Development article on written by Mark Noonan, VP of Sales at Data Foundry- Choosing the Right Data Center for Disaster Recovery Planning. These factors establish the groundwork for evaluating a data center that will best meet your IT needs and provide a concrete disaster recovery component. Read full article here or read below as we reveal steps 4-6.

4. Network
Network availability and the number of carrier options are crucial factors as they relate to reliability and cost. Carrier-neutral facilities have multiple carrier options that allow for optimized traffic, high levels of network redundancy, and leverage in contract negotiations with a network provider. Competitive pricing is a benefit that a carrier-neutral data center can provide to its customers.

5. Security
There are many levels of security at a data center that can be implemented both inside and outside of the facility. A premium data center will incorporate multiple levels of security across both areas.

A facility with a strong outer layer of security can reduce the chance of vandalism or break-ins. The first line of defense is a barrier or fence, guarded access, and perimeter intrusion monitoring solutions. This solution, which may be integrated into the facility’s access control and alarm monitoring system, can include video technology based on a virtual perimeter. Around-the-clock security at all entrances, including loading docks, provides increased protection from unauthorized access.

Internal security measures can include multiple layers of authentication to control access to the data center. Biometric options such as retina or palm scanners offer an elevated level of identification. Internal, closed-captioned video systems monitoring all entrances and key areas throughout the facility provide surveillance and archive footage of all activity. Data centers also implement features such as mantraps that consist of interlocking doors in which the first set of doors must close before the second set opens. Mantraps require measures such as pass codes, cards, or biometric scanners for further access.

Since the data center houses critical information and IT infrastructures, it is important to understand the full extent of the security measures taken at each level of the facility and campus.

6. Staff

A top-notch facility will have experienced and knowledgeable staff to help with any support issue that may arise. Yet half of all data centers in the U.S. are understaffed or under-skilled, according to studies such may arise. Yet half of all data centers in the U.S. are understaffed or under-skilled, according to studies such as the Symantec’s 2010 State of the Data Center. Only consider a data center that has onsite support staff 24/7/365, not only during standard business hours. Data centers commonly offer “remote hands” service so customers can rely on the data center’s personnel even when they are not physically there.
