HIBERNIA ATLANTIC HIRES FERGUS INNES AS VICE PRESIDENT OF SALES, EUROPE

Posted by Jaymie Scotto on July 23rd, 2009
Fergus Innes, VP Sales, Europe for Hibernia Atlantic

Fergus Innes, VP Sales, Europe for Hibernia Atlantic

Fergus Innes has joined the Hibernia Atlantic team as Vice President of Sales, Europe.  This is a win-win for both Fergus and Hibernia Atlantic as he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from the industry.   Prior to joining Hibernia Atlantic, Fergus spent eight years at COLT Telecom, most recentlyas the Sales Director in its Irish Major Enterprise Division.   This is important to note, since Hibernia Atlantic has now entered Phase II of the ‘Project Kelvin’ build, a new modern transAtlantic submarine cable entering Northern Ireland at Portrush.

However, it’s also important to note that Fergus wasn’t brought in simply to manage sales its new Irish cable system. On the contrary, Hibernia Atlantic’s business has been growing steadily for a number of years.  Particular growth includes its award winning Global Financial Network (GFN) services available in more than 31 points of presence (PoPs) and in many key financial cities throughout Western Europe and the U.S, including London, Slough, Frankfurt, Amsterdam and more.

At Hibernia Atlantic, Fergus is charged to lead the European sales team, which is focused on driving Hibernia Atlantic’s redundant and diverse cable transport services into the enterprise, government and wholesale telecom sectors.

This is an exciting time and an exciting opportunity for Hibernia Atlantic to continue on this positive trajectory.  The press release in its entirety follows.

HIBERNIA ATLANTIC EXPANDS ITS SALES FORCE AS IT FURTHER INCREASES ITS NETWORK FOOTPRINT IN EUROPE

 TRANSATLANTIC CABLE PROVIDER HIRES FERGUS INNES AS A VICE PRESIDENT OF SALES, EUROPE

SUMMIT, NJ & DUBLIN, IRELAND – JULY 22, 2009- Hibernia Atlantic, the only diverse transAtlantic submarine transport cable provider, today announces it has increased its sales force, hiring new team members throughout Amsterdam, London and Paris.  The expansion of Hibernia’s sales force also includes the appointment of Industry veteran Fergus Innes as Vice President of Sales, Europe.

 Mr. Innes’ primary focus at Hibernia Atlantic will be to lead a team focused on driving Hibernia Atlantic’s cable transport services into the business, government and wholesale sectors throughout all of Europe.

The expanded sales force is in response to Hibernia Atlantic’s continued growth in the European marketplace, with additional transAtlantic capacity and terrestrial network infrastructure.

“With the recent landing of our transAtlantic fibre optic cable on the shores of Northern Ireland,” states Eric Gutshall, Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Hibernia, “we have new physical infrastructure and available capacity to penetrate European and global commerce. Additionally, Fergus and other talented team members collectively bring extensive regional telecommunications experience as Hibernia Atlantic continues to grow throughout Europe.”

Prior to joining Hibernia Atlantic, Fergus spent eight years at COLT Telecom, most recently holding the position of COLT’s Sales Director in its Irish Major Enterprise Division. Before COLT, Fergus held senior executive positions in the UK at Cable & Wireless, Telia and Thus.

“Hibernia is an innovative and dynamic organisation that understands exactly what is important to our customers,” continues Fergus Innes, the newly hired VP of Sales, Europe at Hibernia.  “Key network differentiators are the speed and resiliency of our 24,000km fibre optic cable system.  We are continually increasing our global footprint, adding new Points of Presence (PoPs) to fulfill the demand of our Enterprise and Carrier clients. Our Global Financial Network (GFN) division alone has implemented more than 31 PoPs within the last few months, as we deliver new, low latency routes to major exchanges and Multi-lateral Trading Facilities (MTFs).  It is an exciting time to be part of the Hibernia team and I look forward to delivering leading edge solutions to our rapidly increasing customer base throughout Europe.”

Michael Corr, EVP Sales & Marketing for DealCenter, LLC.

On July 22, 2009, Michael Dinan, TMCnet Editor interviewed Michael Corr, the Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing of the DealCenter about its deployment at the upcoming ITExpo West, held in Los Angeles from September 1-3, 2009.

This is the first time, in its 10-year history, that ITExpo is leveraging a Professional Networking tool to provide its attendees with the ability to schedule meetings prior to arriving on site.  The DealCenter provides attendees with the ability to search for specific companies, titles/positions, specific individuals, and interests (whether they’re buying or selling).  The caveat at ITExpo is that attendees must register into the DealCenter in order to use the system.

ITExpo is clearly one of the largest conferences of its kind.  The show was previously known as the ‘Internet Telephony Conference & Expo’ and is organized by the esteemed TMC, the world’s largest communications and technology community.

Can Your Business Survive an IT Infrastructure Disaster?

Posted by Jaymie Scotto on July 16th, 2009

A TELECOM NEWS NOW EXCLUSIVE

No business or company is immune to an IT Infrastructure Disaster.  With more and more reliability on computers and networking, especially in disparate locations, the vulnerability increases for a disaster to strike.  Disasters come in a variety of forms; it could be an electrical outage that hits your infrastructure that doesn’t have adequate power back-up facilities.  Or perhaps it’s a roof collapse, flash flood, tornado, hurricane, terrorist attack, fire or even a virus that quickly spreads through your network and attacks or deletes valuable company information.

Are you ready?

Companies often think about the here and now and rarely about the ‘ifs.’  But what happens when a disaster strikes, since in business continuity it’s rarely an ‘if’ but when. Do you know what the potential impact could be on your business?  What could you lose, your customers lose and how could your company survive the aftermath of potentially losing invaluable data, not to mention customers.

Have you thought about your business’ ability to survive without your IT Infrastructure in place, whether it’s a few hours, days or weeks?  How long could your business sustain without the ability to communicate both internally and externally?  How long could your customers’ business withstand without your services?  In today’s business world, where companies rely on one another for quality of service and performance, it’s critical to deploy a successful and proven disaster recovery plan.

A Disaster Recovery plan isn’t one that is just thought about and discussed; it should be written, distributed to key personnel and tested prior to implementation.  So in the event of an emergency, when time is critical and communication may be scarce, your team spends less time scrambling and more time operating under a predetermined plan.   Your company’s IT team will know where the data is and how to recover systems, to ensure minimal downtime.

Justin Giardina, the Chief Technology Officer of iland Internet Solutions, provides global enterprise businesses and Technology Company’s guidance, including process implementation, infrastructure design, and business continuity solutions.  Justin advises companies to establish a well-written plan that outlines the order of importance. “Exchange, email and blackberry servers should be the first to come online,” Justin advises.  “Without the ability to communicate internally to organize relief efforts or to communicate updates externally to customers and vendors, the whole Disaster Recovery plan could fall apart.” The ability to communicate efficiently with clear expectations for everyone involved is key to a company’s survival of an IT Infrastructure disaster.

When building your IT Infrastructure Business Continuity Plan, here are some suggestions to keep in mind:

  1. Executive Leadership Sponsorship.  A successful plan must be implemented and driven by a company’s Executive Leadership.  This ensures that adequate resources could be invested into developing the plan.  In addition, should the plan need to be implemented, the Executive Leadership is aware of the staff’s roles and responsibilities in order to manage and motivate the team throughout the disaster.
  2. Establish a Committee to define and implement the scope of the plan.  This is a team appointed by Executive Leadership, representing all functional areas of a company’s business, including operations and other IT staff.
  3. Perform a Risk Analysis Evaluation.  The group should discuss a variety of scenarios that could affect the business so the company could estimate the potential consequences and impact that these scenarios may have on the business.   For example, where are important files kept?  What documents are vital to the business’ survival?  Are these documents backed up?
  4. Prioritize Processes & Operations.  Each department and process should be documented and reviewed to identify the key functions and most critical functions as it pertains to day-to-day business operations.  For Finance, it could be banking information, for human resources, it could be personnel records.  For marketing, it could be client information.  Each department ultimately has its own tolerance for loss time or data.
  5. Create Strategies for Recovery.  The company’s business will have different levels of importance and depending on the type of scenario that will impact your business, it will be important to consider all aspects, not just information and personnel.  This includes the ability to evaluate how to keep facilities, hardware, software, customer service, telephony systems and other IT Infrastructure-related equipment intact, accessible and insured to survive any disaster.  In addition, end-user customers may have different fault-tolerance requirements and contracts may include a variety of Service Level Agreements (SLAs) to consider when constructing the plan.
  6. Data Inventory.  Each company should know all of its data points, documentation requirements, and materials and where all of this information is kept both digitally and physically.
  7. Create a Written Plan. A written plan could be kept in draft form, and ideally should be reviewed monthly and must have Executive Leadership aware of the latest available version.  The document should be organized to include detailed procedures and provide a clear road map for recovery.  The most recent copy should be kept at multiple locations both within the organization as well as at key individuals’ homes.

Once a plan is defined, it is important to implement it through a variety of tests.  Justin Giardina, prior to his current role at iland Internet Solutions, had a hands-on experience that put his company’s disaster recovery plan to test.  During Hurricane Katrina, Justin was an IT Manager at Delta Petroleum Company, an independent energy company that at the time was headquartered in Louisiana.  He managed and oversaw the headquarter operations outside of New Orleans; this was also the home to the company’s email exchange server, VoIP systems and a variety of other important applications used throughout the company.  There were seven branch office locations throughout the United States and Canada, and each location had minimal IT support primarily in the form of servers and people.  The company’s IT infrastructure disaster recovery plan had some key requirements:

  • - Should restore and back-up information easily
  • - Should increase operational facility of the company
  • - Should be able to get critical applications up and running ASAP
  • - Should be cost effective
  • - Should not have to mimic a complete Data Center in another facility
  • - Should not require a tape back up or tape library

As the plan was built, a variety of solutions were evaluated.  As an IT Manager, Justin’s main goal was cost effective simplicity.  With few vendors able to provide him with the ability to restore and backup information to dissimilar hardware (i.e. Dell to Compaq) and the lack of hardware agnostic providers, his search for a viable solution was frustrating.

However, Acronis’ universal restore solution, which only required one driver, provided the company the ability to restore data to dissimilar hardware.  In addition, with the ability to test the environment prior to implementation, Justin was able to simply access data through flexible data recovery solutions that included the ability to write to an FTP site, Windows share or attach the equipment directly to a disc – this provided an easily recoverable option within the VMware environment they had in place.

After being evacuated from the New Orleans area prior to Hurricane Katrina’s landfall, the company had set in motion a disaster recovery plan that included a back-up facility in Houston, TX and access to proven IT systems.  With procedures and processes fully outlined, the company swiftly went into action to bring up the most vital infrastructure, email and voice systems, which ensured communications both internally and externally.  Finally, the plan provided an invaluable blue-print that provided the company with clear direction and responsibility lines that were followed calmly and efficiently.

“In the end, crunch time was a success,” added Justin Giardina, CTO of iland Internet Solutions.  “Having already tested our solution, we were able to restore the network to virtual back-up machines and most employees didn’t even know we were affected.”

Technology has advanced since the time of Justin’s Hurricane Katrina experience while at Delta Petroleum. The company he is currently with – iland Internet Solutions provides many cost effective back-up and replication solutions incorporating the latest in software, hardware, and technology advancements. Their team of certified experts takes into consideration their client’s budget, number of available IT staff, as well as tolerance for downtime when formulating the best disaster recovery plan.  With a Cisco, Dell, Microsoft and VMware certified team that specializes in disaster recovery infrastructure solutions clients can ensure their company’s business critical environments are always backed-up, available and reinforced in the event of a disaster.

IT Infrastructure Disaster Recovery plans do not have to cost a fortune, but should be required fodder for any company planning to stay in business.  A variety of cost effective solutions are available that include virtualization technologies, physical infrastructure deployment or a hybrid of both.  Though your IT Infrastructure is vital to your business, it’s not the only thing that keeps a company operational.  Processes that are well-written, developed and communicated efficiently rely on a company’s key asset – its personnel – to implement it and manage it.  At the end of the day it’s not about the disaster, it’s about how your business continued to thrive in the face of adversity.

Posted by Jaymie Scotto on July 14th, 2009

In a tough economy, companies are challenged to increase its communications infrastructure cost effectively, especially to meet the growing demand that video, streaming media and Internet enabled applications put on its networks.  Today, there are  a variety of solutions that companies can leverage to get what they need, cost effectively and efficiently without losing time, resources and money in doing so.  This is the message clearly evident in the TelServ announcement that came out on July 14th, 2009.

TelServ, a New Jersey-based Independent Telecommunciations Consulting Firm today announced the company’s growth; which it attributes to excellent customer service and extensive relationships within the telecommunications industry.  It is this combination that provides TelServ the ability to negotiate contracts that benefit its customers by enabling them with additional bandwidth and services at reduced costs.  This past month alone, the company increased its sales by 25%, a trend that reiterates the strength of the company’s mission – to provide a one-stop source for communication needs of small, medium and large businesses.

TELSERV, A NEW JERSEY-BASED, INDEPENDENT TELECOMMUNICATIONS CONSULTING FIRM, INCREASES BUSINESS BY 25% WITHIN ONE MONTH’S TIME

TELSERV OFFERS FIRMS COMPETITIVE, OFTEN REDUCED COMMUNCIATIONS PRICING WITH INCREASED BANDWIDTH, A BOON IN TODAY’S TOUGH ECONOMIC TIMES

MONTVALE, NJ – JULY 14, 2009Telserv NJ, LLC, an independent, telecommunications consulting firm offering tailor-made solutions for business communication needs, announces a 25% increase in orders from last month to this month. This growth is attributed to Telserv’s personalized care and industry expertise, often negotiating with the country’s top-tier carriers for the best price and greatest bandwidth.  This turnkey service is critical, especially in today’s tough economic climate, for small to large-sized businesses, such as legal houses, health care professionals, call centers, colocation companies, billing and financial services firms.  These businesses require an increase in voice and/or data network capacity but still need to be mindful of operational costs and strict IT budgets.

One such company, a nationally renowned, medical billing company, required an increase in its network capacity while meeting specific budgetary targets.  After unsuccessfully reaching out to the incumbent carrier and other service providers in its area, the client hired Telserv to meet its needs. “After analyzing the client’s network requirements,” states Michael Gallucci, CEO and Founder of Telserv, “we were able to offer a tailored, communications package that literally doubled the client’s existing bandwidth, offered unlimited local calling and 30,000 minutes of toll free, long distance and regional calling.  The end-result was a 32% savings on the firm’s existing monthly costs. More bandwidth, less Cap-Ex.  Plus, Telserv is a single point of contact, saving the client valuable time negotiating with multiple carriers and comparing numerous proposals.”

With over 20 years of industry experience, Telserv utilizes its expertise to be a true, one-stop resource for all business communications. Telserv does not represent any single company; instead the company contracts with several major carriers to provide a full array of local, long distance, data and Internet services at wholesale prices. From competitive pricing to assistance with implementation processes and facilitating diversity and redundancy plans, Telserv helps firms meet their budgetary targets even during tight economic downturns.

KIT digital Reports on Recent Client Wins

New Clients and Client Extensions in Media, Telecom, Financial Services, Gaming and Government through First Half of 2009

DUBAI – July 7, 2009 - KIT digital, Inc. (OTCBB: KDGL), a leading global provider of Internet Protocol (IP)-based video management technologies, has continued its strong organic growth by adding a number of globally recognized brands to its customer list in the first half of 2009.

The company has expanded its client reach in each of its three regional coverage areas (EMEA, Asia-Pacific and the Americas) with the addition of brands like PMT and MSN (EMEA), Tabcorp (Asia-Pacific) and Citadel Broadcasting (the Americas). The new business includes deployments across a variety of industry verticals and consumer “screens” (browser, mobile handset, IPTV-enabled television set), demonstrating the company’s device-agnostic approach and the breadth of functionality available through the KIT VX Video Management Platform.

“The last six months have firmly established KIT digital as the leading global provider of IP-based video technologies for the large enterprise,” said Gavin Campion, president of KIT digital. “We have competed head-to-head with competing platforms and internally built solutions, and also advanced KIT VX as part of a greenfield solution for monetizing IP-based video. Across a wide range of verticals-media and entertainment, classifieds, gaming, financial, telecommunications and government-we continue to be the IP video platform of choice for sophisticated companies operating in multiple geographies and network environments.”

The KIT VX end-to-end technology platform helps corporations and governments leverage video content and video-based marketing online, on mobile devices and on Internet-enabled television sets. KIT VX is also used for corporate video deployments, helping clients save money by deploying IP video solutions in lieu of traditional satellite or closed-circuit systems in areas like corporate communications, information kiosks, human resources and training, and security/surveillance.

Selected new client wins during the first half of 2009, where in many instances KIT digital was selected in a competitive RFP process, include:

Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA)

  • MSN Europe, one of the leading online portals, engaged KIT digital to provision high quality, repurposed and localized IP video content, using KIT digital’s content localization facility in Cairo;
  • PMT Video, a major IP video initiative in the Russian marketplace, selected the KIT VX digital asset management system to provide a new service for the Russian consumer: video-on-demand in the home with targeted content and advertising on an open-network IPTV set-top-box;

  • A major private health insurance brand selected KIT digital for an online video solution;
  • Leading Australian tourism operator Spirit of Tasmania appointed KIT digital to manage future online and mobile video marketing applications through its KIT VX asset management system.

The Americas

  • Citadel Broadcasting, the second-largest radio network in the USA, chose the KIT VX digital asset management module for its network of over 220 sites for a further two years, citing the suitability of the KIT VX platform for multi-point publishing as a key differentiator;
  • blinkx, the leading online video search engine, engaged with KIT digital in a major partnership. The deal allows KIT digital to access the blinkx technology and offer it to clients as part of the KIT VX platform. In turn, blinkx uses KIT VX as a technology backbone for the management and delivery of IP video;
  • Mio.tv, a new video-led web portal for the Hispanic community in the U.S., engaged KIT digital to develop a strategy and treatments that facilitated a number of different video-viewing experiences, along with social networking interactions aligned to the video experience;
  • The New York Post reappointed KIT digital as a video technology partner for an additional two years, citing KIT digital’s product development roadmap, and opportunities for customization of the solution as key competitive differentiators.

 KIT digital has continuously expanded the functionality of its KIT VX Video Management Platform through new releases, integrating new features and product modules that have been brought to market as a result of meeting client-driven needs as well as through strategic acquisitions. As a standard practice, the company does not capitalize research and development-which management believes provides for greater transparency in financial reporting and accountability. At times, the company may choose to terminate certain client contracts it deems unprofitable or inappropriately draining company resources.

Kaleil Isaza Tuzman, chairman and CEO of KIT digital, commented: “In addition to client and revenue expansion, the first half of 2009 has been dedicated to ongoing improvement of our KIT VX platform and integration of functionality gleaned from prior acquisitions. We believe that the IP video platform market is beginning to differentiate along several vectors-like ’3-screen’ capability, asset management versus video player focus, geographical coverage, enterprise versus SME focus, etc.”

“We remain committed to serving the IP video needs of the global enterprise,” continued Isaza Tuzman, “which can be highly complex, span multiple physical and network geographies, and require online, mobile and IPTV-based asset management. Our ‘industrial-grade’ digital asset management system and multi-point publishing capability support this go-to-market strategy, while providing for less competitive pressure and higher margins.”
